Inventor of the Hillbilly Backscratcher

My name is Victor Michael Shampton Jr., but I go by Mike Shampton.

My grandfather came to Dayton, Ohio in 1906, from Hungary, to work in a labor camp for Barney and Smith Car Company, making ornate rail cars. He was a blacksmith working with about 700 other Hungarians living in Kossuth Colony.

In 1913, Dayton suffered the worst flood in Ohio History, where all was lost, so the Hungarians moved to Dayton’s West Side.

My father Victor M. Shampton MD, was the youngest of 8 children, and the only one to graduate from high school. He graduated from Roosevelt High school in 1943 and with the GI Bill, he became a Doctor.

I’m one of 8 kids. All of us went to St. Albert the Great School, but separated for high school. I went to Fairmont West and graduated from The Ohio State University in 1977.

I’ve always been an entrepreneur - from a Dayton Daily News paper boy to later owning several restaurants and small businesses.

Dayton is my home.

My greatest achievement is my 3 daughters.
